Written order reverses 1954 decision to revoke scientist’s security clearance.
Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm recently reversed the government’s 1954 decision to revoke J. Robert Oppenheimer’s security clearance to his top-secret nuclear lab. The now-dissolved federal agency, the Atomic Energy Commission, accused the theoretical physicist of having communist sympathies, even though there were no signs of any disloyalty on his part.
“More troubling, historical evidence suggests that the decision to review Dr. Oppenheimer’s clearance had less to do with a bona fide concern for the security of restricted data and more to do with a desire on the part of the political leadership of the AEC to discredit Dr. Oppenheimer in public debates over nuclear weapons policy,” Secretary Granholm said.
Oppenheimer was strongly and vocally opposed to the use of nuclear bombs in warfare.
